6 Tips for Pickleball Beginners

Pickleball is a fun and fast-growing sport, and it’s a great choice for players of all ages and skill levels! If you're just starting out, here are six tips to help you improve your game and enjoy your time on the court:

1. Learn the Basics of the Rules

Before you even pick up your paddle, it’s essential to understand the basic rules of pickleball:

  • Serve: The game begins with an underhand serve from behind the baseline. It must clear the non-volley zone (also called the kitchen) and land in the diagonal service box.
  • Non-volley Zone: You cannot volley (hit the ball in the air before it bounces) while standing in the kitchen, which is a 7-foot area from the net on both sides.
  • Scoring: Pickleball is usually played to 11 or 15 points, and you must win by at least 2 points. Points are scored only when you serve.

2. Focus on Your Serve

A strong, consistent serve is key to gaining an advantage. Focus on making sure your serves:

  • Land in the correct box: Serve diagonally into the opponent’s service box.
  • Are underhand: The serve must be underhand with the paddle below the waist.
  • Go deep: Aim for the back of the service box to push your opponent further back and reduce their ability to attack.

3. Master the "Third Shot Drop"

One of the most important shots in pickleball is the "third shot drop." After serving and returning the serve, you'll likely want to soften the ball and send it into the non-volley zone near the net.

  • Purpose: This shot is designed to neutralize your opponent's attack by forcing them to hit a low return.
  • How to Execute: Gently drop the ball over the net using a controlled, soft shot that lands just inside the kitchen.

4. Stay at the Net

Pickleball is a fast-paced game, and controlling the net is a huge advantage. After your third shot drop, you should move toward the net as quickly as possible. When you're at the net:

  • You have better access to volleys (hitting the ball before it bounces).
  • It allows you to be more aggressive and put pressure on your opponents.
  • Be mindful not to stand in the kitchen when volleying!

5. Work on Your Footwork

Good footwork is essential to getting into position to hit the ball effectively. Practice these key movements:

  • Side-step to adjust your position.
  • Shuffle toward the ball without crossing your feet.
  • Quick reaction: Pickleball often involves fast exchanges, so be ready to move quickly and change direction.

6. Communicate in Doubles

If you’re playing doubles, communication with your partner is crucial. Discuss beforehand whether you'll take certain shots, such as who will handle lobs or who will be responsible for covering particular areas of the court. Clear and quick communication will help you both work as a cohesive team.
